If it is in a bootloop or cannot enter the OS, move to the second method. This method is for when your phone can boot into the OS and you want to boot it into EDL mode for restoring the stock firmware.

Learn how to flash firmware files on Qualcomm Android devices using QPST Tool. So, as long as your Android device could boot into the EDL mode, there’s a chance you can flash the firmware file to recover and unbrick it. During this process, EDL implements the Firehose/Sahara protocol and acts as a Secondary Bootloader to accept commands for flashing. The figure on the right shows the boot process when EDL mode is executed.

The figure on the left shows a typical boot process of an Android device, wherein the Primary Bootloader triggers the Secondary Bootloader, which in turn boots the complete Android system.

Unlike Fastboot, Download, and Recovery modes on Android, which reside in the Secondary Bootloader (SBL), PBL resides within the ROM and so it could not be corrupted due to software errors (again, like a wrong flash). EDL itself is a part of the Primary Bootloader (PBL) on Qualcomm Devices. That’s exactly when you’d need to use EDL mode. We often like to refer to this device state as a “Hard-brick”. And thus, there would be no chance of flashing the firmware to revive/unbrick the device. Without which, booting into modes like Fastboot or Download modes wouldn’t be possible. Some times, flashing the wrong file can also potentially corrupt the Android bootloader itself. Generally if the device’s software is corrupted due to a wrong flash or any other software issue, it could be revived by flashing the firmware through Fastboot and Download modes. The OEM flash tools can only communicate with a device and flash it through the said modes. If you’re familiar with flashing firmware or custom binaries (like TWRP, root, etc), you’d know that it is required to boot the Android device into specific boot modes like Fastboot or Download Modes. I also thank OnePlus for somehow failing to prevent the MSM tool from entering the hands of the public every time, and for trafficking this good. Why and when would you need to use EDL Mode? What are your ideas about this and is there another option available that could work for me?ĭualboot with Windows/Kubuntu is a alternatieve but can also be tricky.Īs much as I hate Qualcomm for their monopolistic business practices, I thank them for EDL mode. Everything I need is on the external harddisks. It is no problem for me to change the OS because I don't lose any files.

When I can unlock my phone in Windows with the MSM tool I can install Kubuntu back again on the laptop. Install Windows on the laptop via the flashdrive. Because the OS is on the SSD and not on the laptop do I have access to the USB ports on the laptop via Windows which runs on the SSD? The purpose is to connect the bricked phone to one of the USB ports and use the MSM tool to unbrick my device.Ģ) Buy a USB flash drive and write the ISO from your link to the flashdrive. I can change the boot option in the Bios and select the SSD. I am wondering if and how this will work. I have external harddisks I use for storage (no SSD) and was thinking what is the best option for me:ġ) Buy an external SSD for Windows. I have a laptop with one SSD in it and there is no room for a second SSD. I also thank OnePlus for somehow failing to prevent the MSM tool from entering the hands of the public every time, and for trafficking this good.

I loaded WIndows 10 onto it and tried the MSM from there - AND IT WORKED!Īs much as I hate Qualcomm for their monopolistic business practices, I thank them for EDL mode. I had a spare laptop lying around, and it has USB 2 ports.

I've retried multiple times but still the same result. What is preventing it from getting past this? I'm using the cable provided in the box. MSM recognized the device, showed it as connected and started doing its thing, but stopped at "Sahara Communication failed". I think possibly the lack of a USB 2 port could be the cause.įinally I set up a basic VM with Windows 10 and a USB 2 controller, and it worked-ish. MSM never showed the device as connected. Then I tried it on my mom's Windows 10 laptop.

The drivers didn't even install right it seems, and the device (in EDL mode) wasn't even recognized. įirst I tried this on a Windows 7 VirtualBox VM (I use Ubuntu on my actual computer). As the solution to this problem appears to be to use the MSM tool to do an "actual" factory reset, I downloaded the MSM tool, and the decrypted ROM from this link. So, my phone's bricked - it won't boot, just brings up fastboot.
